There is although an overlap of chemist and a chemical engineer, but, a sharp distinction also exists.
1) A chemist particularly works with chemicals on a small scale, or you can say, in a small test tubes. Whereas a chemical engineer deals with physical and chemical processes and reactions on a large scale.
2) A chemist does not accounts for economics of a process. Chemist has to develop the ways of producing the particular product meeting all prescribed requirements. While it is a core responsibility of a chemical engineer to ensure that the on-going physical or chemical process is economical one.
3) A chemist works in lab while chemical engineer works with huge plant.
